Photographers Gather in Newport Sept. 13-14
By: Rich Bergeman on: Wed 27 of Aug, 2008 [07:00] (2 reads)
Photographers are invited to a free weekend workshop at the Newport Visual Arts Center Sept. 13-14 to participate in field trips, portfolio sharing and information on a variety of alternative processes. Organized by Northwest regional members of the Analog Photography Users Group, the workshop will include discussions and demonstrations on a variety of traditional photographic methods, such as large format camera use, platinum printing, home-brewed silver emulsions and other alternative processes. Although the emphasis will be on film photographic techniques, digital photographers are also invited to the workshop to learn more about film and join in the fun. The event is being held in the second floor classroom of the VAC, located at 777 NW Beach Drive (on the Nye Beach Turnaround). The first workshop sessions begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, but early arrivals are invited to a morning shooting session at the public docks on Bay Boulevard beginning a 8 a.m. For information, contact Rich at rbergeman@proaxis.com or Denise at denise@dwrphotos.com.

Photographer David Paul Bayles at Corvallis Arts Center
By: Rich Bergeman on: Thu 24 of Jul, 2008 [19:00] (71 reads)
The Arts Center will present an exhibit of images of the forest featuring Corvallis photographer David Paul Bayles and painter Monte Shelton Aug. 28-Sept. 28. Bayles will show a series of trees in the process of being felled. "The process of pre-visualizing each tree's fall was challenging and exciting," Bayles writes about his work. "I could see how tall a tree was, but where would the top be when it was at 45 degrees? How fast would it be falling? After deciding on what I thought would be the most compelling view, I selected my lens and fe-stop/shutter speed combination. Photographing motion is always guesswork, and especially so with this work: a tree moves slowly at first, gaining speed with its momentum." Bayles will give a gallery talk on his work on Sept. 18 at 7pm at the Arts Center (free to CAC members; $10 to non-members)

Looking Ahead: Portland Art Museum to show historic Columbia Gorge Prints
By: Rich Bergeman on: Wed 23 of Jul, 2008 [17:00] (48 reads)
Here's something to mark your calendars for: Opening on Oct. 4 at the Portland Art Museum is what promises to be an exquisite exhibit of original photographs of the Columbia Gorge by such legendary 19th and early 20th century photographers as Carleton Watkins, Edward S. Curtis and the duo of Lily White and Sarah Ladd. "Wild Beauty: Photographs of the Columbia River Gorge, 1867-1957" will contain about 300 of the most striking pictures every made of the Gorge--not only idyllic landscapes but also views of road and railroad building through the Gorge, concluding with images by Oregon photographers Ray Atkeson, Al Monner and others of the completion of the Bonneville and Dalles Dams. In addition to showing the changing character of the landscape, the exhibit will reflect how technological advances in photography during this 90-year period affected how the Gorge was pictured--from the early mammoth plate cameras used by Watkins to increasingly portable cameras that allowed photographers access to previously unattainable viewpoints. The show runs from Oct. 4, 2008, through Jan. 11, 2009
