PhotoArts Guild Socially Distanced Photo Excursions

March 2020

Because of social distancing and bans on travel, PhotoArts Guild members couldn’t get together for photo excursions as we normally would. Instead, we collected images made during the COVID-19 lockdown into galleries of images made by our members as they distance themselves and continue to create photography in these trying times.

Each member’s excursion is presented as its own collection of photographs with descriptions. Latest submissions are on the top, older ones further down.

What started as a single gallery of images has been broken down into three montly galleries.

Jack Larson – Timberhill Natural Area

Jack takes frequent walks in the Timberhill Natural Area.

Shelley Curtis – Stay At Home (with exceptions)

Since the statewide announcement for “stay at home” and “social distancing” that’s what Shelley has been doing. Outings are limited to walks around the neighborhood, grocery shopping, and a few errands.

Al Ryckman – Fairy Terns of Honolulu

While marooned in Hawaii, Al has been photographing the fabulous, pure white Fairy Terns (Gygis Alba) of Honolulu. The Hawaiians called them Manu-O-Ku and were grateful that they “guided” the big sea going double-hulled Polynesian Canoes ashore.

Eric French – At the beach

Eric has been finding social isolation at the beach in Oregon (plus one from California).

Tom Heath – Birds of Finley National Wildlife Refuge

In the past couple of weeks, when the sun is out, Tom has gone out to Finley and photographs the variety of birds available at the refuge, from the tiny Bushtits and Ruby-Crowned Kinglets, to the Great Egrets and Geese.

Vicky Hollenbeck – (mostly) Corvallis Streets

These images were taken on recent walks around the neighborhood and downtown Corvallis – except one photo, demonstrating Social Distancing among peppers.

Paul Barden – Around the Farm

Paul is, as usual, finding plenty of inspiration at home on his farm.

Herman Krieger – A Walk in My Neighborhood

Although these photos weren’t taken during the COVID-19 outbreak, Herman has long practiced photography on his neighborhood walks. Additional photos of these happier times can be found on his website at http://members.efn.org/~hkrieger/oakway.htm.

Rich Bergeman – Jackson Frazier Wetlands

Rich took an infrared photograph in the Wetlands and a color photograph just outside them.

Phil Coleman – Backyard Flowers

Phil has been scouring his yard for photo subjects – namely flowers. Virus or not, spring is coming.

Bill Laing – Honeybee Canyon, Oro Valley Arizona

On Monday, March 23rd our southernmost member, Bill Laing, socially distanced himself in Honeybee Canyon, near Tucson.

John Ritchie – Saturday Night in the Pearl

Curious to know how social distancing and the shutdown of bars and restaurants was affecting night life in Portland, on Saturday March 21st John went to the Pearl District for a night photography shoot. On a normal Saturday night the Pearl is packed with restaurant goers and bar hoppers. What John found was vastly different – a ghost town.

Mark Meyer – In and around Corvallis

Over the last few weeks Mark has wandered around the Thompsons Mill and Peoria Road area, as well as local in-town walks.
